What Is Jeet Kune Do?

Jeet Kune Do isn’t a traditional martial art, it’s a system built for real-world combat.

Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is the martial art and philosophy developed by Bruce Lee. Translated as “The Way of the Intercepting Fist,” it is built on efficiency, adaptability, and directness in combat. Instead of relying on fixed patterns or rigid techniques, JKD trains students to respond instinctively and effectively in real time. The objective is simple: intercept and control an opponent’s movement with speed, precision, and economy of motion.

Built From Proven Systems

JKD draws from three highly effective disciplines:

  • Wing Chun
  • Western Boxing
  • Western Fencing

Together, these influences develop:

  • Timing & distance control
  • Footwork & mobility
  • Efficient striking
  • Real-world self-defense skills

Our Lineage

From Bruce Lee to Ekata

At Ekata Training Center, students train within a direct lineage connected to Bruce Lee’s original teachings.

Head instructor Sifu Ed Monaghan trained under Sifu Jerry Poteet, a first-generation student of Bruce Lee. This connection preserves the core principles and training methods that define authentic Jeet Kune Do.

At the same time, our program evolves those teachings through modern biomechanics and realistic training methods—ensuring students can apply JKD effectively in today’s world.
